Body of ice fisherman recovered from lake

? An ice fisherman from Salina drowned in Kanopolis Lake in central Kansas, authorities said.

The body of Gary Gullickson, 60, was recovered Sunday, the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office said.

Gullickson was reported missing Saturday night when he failed to return home from the lake.

He was retired from the Salina Fire Department, where he had been a firefighter-engineer and an emergency medical technician, said a son-in-law, Mike Junk.

The ice where Gullickson fell in was about 5 inches thick, which is usually safe under ideal conditions, said Rick Martin, Kanopolis State Park manager.

“We’ve had freeze and thawing, and that makes for very poor ice conditions,” he said. “Snow sitting on top of the ice has a tendency to insulate it, and it melts that upper layer a little bit.”
