Kemp, Jayhawks seeking third straight Big 12 victory

? It’s been five years since Kansas University has won three Big 12 Conference women’s basketball games in a row.

The Jayhawks have a chance to do it again when they tangle tonight with Nebraska.

Tipoff will be at 7:05 p.m. at the Devaney Center. There is no television.

Thanks in large part to Crystal Kemp, KU has posted consecutive wins over Missouri (63-61) and Colorado (65-60). In those two games, Kemp has averaged 18.5 points and 14.5 rebounds a game.

“She has made great progress in her conditioning and work ethic,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said about Kemp, “but I think there is room for more growth and improvement.”

Kemp, a 6-foot-2 junior from Topeka, has posted seven double-doubles this season. She is averaging 15.1 points and 9.1 rebounds a game.

“She is learning to be harder to guard,” Henrickson said. “I think if she develops more inside moves she will become a more dominant player.

“We want her to be a good face-up post player, a complete player.”

Kemp had 15 points and 15 boards at Colorado as the Jayhawks posted their first league road victory of the season.

Point guard Erica Hallman has also sparkled in the last two games. The 5-8 junior from Covington, Ky., averaged 17.0 points and 6.5 assists against the Tigers and the Buffaloes.

The Jayhawks (9-8 overall, 2-4 Big 12) are in a stretch where they are playing four of five games on the road. After tonight, the Jayhawks will play host Wednesday to Oklahoma, then make trips Feb. 5 to Missouri and Feb. 9 to Oklahoma State.

Nebraska (11-7, 3-3) has had a week to rest since suffering a 74-54 loss at Iowa State. The Cornhuskers are an outside-oriented team led by guard Kiera Hardy, a 5-6 sophomore from Kansas City (Mo.) O’Hara who is averaging 19.4 points a game.
