Man injured in fall arrested

Police said today that a man found injured Thursday morning in a downtown alley has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill a coffee-shop worker — something police say he did shortly before he accidentally fell and injured his head.

Full details of the incident weren’t released until this morning because the case had been under investigation, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

Here’s what happened:

A city worker called police after finding the 38-year-old man about 7:30 a.m. Thursday lying injured in the alley between Connecticut and Rhode Island Streets south of Seventh Street. Police initially said they weren’t sure what had happened to the man, and he was flown by air ambulance to a Kansas City hospital.

Police later said the injuries were the result of an accidental fall and that he wasn’t the victim of a crime.

When the man got out of the hospital Thursday afternoon, police were waiting to arrest him on suspicion of making a criminal threat and criminal use of a firearm. They allege that shortly before he suffered his fall, he came into Java Break, 15 E. 7th St., and threatened to kill an employee.

Police believe he was under the influence of alcohol, according to a report. Officers found a handgun at the scene of his fall.
