ST. MARYS ? Mark Randtke scored 41 points for Veritas Christian’s boys basketball squad Thursday night, and, believe it or not, he wasn’t the hero.

That was Matt Steinle, who only scored six points. But three came on a 24-footer at the buzzer in overtime that gave the Eagles a 73-72 victory over St. Mary’s Academy.

Veritas had the ball with the score tied near the end of regulation, but the Eagles turned the ball over.

In overtime, Veritas cut a four-point St. Mary’s lead to one. With 3.6 seconds left, a St. Mary’s player sank the first of two free throws but missed the second. Veritas quickly called timeout and drew up one play.

On that play, Steinle caught the inbounds pass at halfcourt, and, according to coach Doug Bennett, “took two steps, and a running three-pointer went in.

“It probably was about a 24-foot shot,” Bennett said. “He made a good shot. He squared his shoulders up. He shot it, he didn’t throw it up like a lot of kids would.”

Of course, the Eagles probably wouldn’t have won without Randtke and those 41 points, either.

“One of the mismatches we had was inside, so we worked real hard to get it in to Mark,” Bennett said.

“The guys were intense for all the minutes of the game and just never gave up. There were times when (St. Mary’s) started to pull away, but our guys hung in there.”

Veritas (9-5) will play host to Berean on Tuesday at the East Lawrence Center.
