Ralph A. Loyd, Ottawa

? Memorial services for Ralph A. Loyd, 87, Ottawa, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

Mr. Loyd died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.

He was born May 20, 1917, in Hill City, the son of Ulysses S. and Nellie F. Clark Loyd. He was raised and schooled in Morland.

Mr. Loyd received a bachelor’s degree in education from Fort Hays State College in 1941. He received a master’s degree in English from Kansas State University in 1955.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 45th Infantry Division during World War II and fought in campaigns throughout the European theater.

Mr. Loyd was an educator in Kansas for 37 years, including five as a teacher at Kansas State. He also taught at elementary, junior high and high schools and was principal of Hawthorne Elementary School for 25 years.

He was a member of Ottawa Area Retired Teachers Assn., Kansas Retired Teachers Assn., Kansas Parent-Teacher Assn., Kansas Elementary Principals Assn., and United School Administrators Assn. He served as president of the First District Kansas Elementary Principals Assn. for three years.

Mr. Loyd also was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, Franklin County Historical Society, Friends of the Ottawa Library, Ottawa Pride Committee, Franklin County Humane Society, Ottawa Sertoma Club and Sertoma International.

He married Inez Mead on Oct. 20, 1945, in Topeka. She died Sept. 23, 1994.

Survivors include three daughters, Sondra Forsythe, Prairie Village, Andrea Mills and Dena Foley, both of Ottawa; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
