Bulldogs rebound for third-place victory

? Baldwin High’s boys basketball team beat Kansas City Turner, 76-63, on Saturday in the third-place game of the Baldwin Invitational less than 24 hours after suffering a 85-41 loss to Kansas City (Mo.) Lincoln Prep.

“We tried putting Lincoln Prep in the past, but it also helped us,” Baldwin guard Jeremy Wright said.

The Bulldogs (4-6) were flustered Friday night by Lincoln Prep’s relentless press, but they showed resolve Saturday by breaking down most of the Golden Bears’ press attempts with quick, precise passes.

With Wright and fellow guard Aaron Hannon at the helm, the Bulldogs found a fluidity their opposition never could stop.

Baldwin’s four-point halftime lead could have suggested a barnburner, but a dominant third quarter by the Bulldogs eliminated any possible suspense. BHS outscored Turner, 21-7, in the third quarter and coasted from there.

Ben Knoll and Hannon each scored 16 points, and Wright added 12 for BHS.

“We haven’t come together quite yet,” Knoll said. “I think today showed what we can do when we play to our own potential.”

Friday’s game marked the third meeting of the schools this season.

“We knew what they’d throw at us,” Knoll said.

Going into the game, the season series was knotted at 1-1.

“It’s a rivalry, even though we don’t play in the same league,” Cooper said about Turner (3-8).

Baldwin will play host Tuesday to Ottawa, which crushed Wellsville, 97-45, in the fifth-place game Saturday.

“They’re not a 5-6 team,” Cooper said of the Cyclones. “That record is deceiving.”

Wright and Hannon joined Ottawa’s Caleb Blakesley and Mill Valley’s David Woods as area players selected to the all-tournament team.

Lincoln Prep won the championship Saturday, 52-35, over Augusta.

Fifth-place game

Mill Valley 58,

Anderson County 48

With a — in the words of Mill Valley coach Justin Bogart — “pretty workmanlike” pace, the Jaguars (7-3) executed like a rhythmic machine.

Seventh-place game

Ottawa 97, Wellsville 45

The Cyclones (5-6) steamrolled the Eagles (2-8) with a balanced offense attack. All nine Ottawa players who scored registered at least five points, led by Dustin Toland (18) and Blakesley (17).
