Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

  • House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, said it was likely that the House would act quickly on a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage in Kansas. The Senate approved the measure Thursday, 28-11, one vote more than the two-thirds needed to put it on the ballot. Mays said the measure was likely to go straight to the floor for debate.

  • Senate Republicans announced plans to unveil a health care package Tuesday when legislators return from the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday break. While not disclosing details, the plan is a response to a $50 million package outlined last month by Democrat Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
  • The governor’s chief energy adviser outlined a series of recommendations designed to encourage the development of wind energy in Kansas, while taking steps to protect the last remaining acres of the North American tallgrass prairie. The policy includes a goal of increasing electricity produced by wind turbines to 1,000 megawatts by 2015.
