Area roundup: Baldwin girls win in 2OT

? It took two extra sessions before Baldwin High’s girls basketball team came out ahead of Osawatomie, 66-64, Tuesday night.

A back-and-forth game went to the first overtime when Baldwin’s Elle Meinen banked in a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

Osawatomie (2-3) responded with a buzzer-beating three-pointer of its own to go to the second overtime, but Baldwin (5-1) prevailed.

“Overall, it was an exciting game,” Baldwin coach Eric Toot said. “I thought both teams gave an excellent effort, and we were fortunate to come out on top.”

Toot said his team was all the more fortunate to escape with the victory because Baldwin trailed by eight points in the fourth quarter.

Girls

Tonganoxie 60, Leavenworth Immaculata 31

Leavenworth — The Chieftains dominated the second half en route to an easy victory.

Leavenworth Immaculata challenged Tonganoxie in the first half, but THS came alive in the third quarter, outscoring Immaculata by 20 behind Ali Pistora and Addie Heim’s 38 points.

Tonganoxie coach Randy Kraft also gave credit to his defense, which held Immaculata to 11 points in the second half.

“We picked up our defensive pressure in the second half,” he said, “and offensively we did a real good job of executing and made the extra pass.”

Boys

Osawatomie 75, Baldwin 64

Baldwin — The Bulldogs squandered a 36-29 halftime lead.

“The tale of two halves,” BHS coach Heath Cooper said. “That’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel all season: We can’t put two halves together. We had a great first half and were up seven. We didn’t play real good, especially on defense, in the second half, and they just pulled away.

“They’re a good team. I was real impressed with that bunch. They’re well-coached.”

Baldwin (2-4) was led by Aaron Hannon’s 11 points and Ben Knoll’s 10. Knoll also had six rebounds, and Austin Inzer contributed eight points and six boards.

Paola 64, Ottawa 53

Paola — Ottawa (3-4) faced a 14-point deficit in the first quarter before it even got a shot off against Paola (5-1).

“Our inability to execute offensively is really getting us right now,” Cyclones coach David Grover said.

Matt Leecy led the Cyclones with 19 points.

Immac 63, Tonganoxie 46

Tonganoxie — The Chieftains outscored top-ranked Immaculata for a half, but Immac proved why it’s ranked No. 1 in Class 2A.

Tonganoxie (2-5) was outscored 42-24 in the second half, but coach David Walker was pleased with the first half.

“We took a step in the right direction, but we’ve got to put together a full game,” he said.

Anderson Co. 57, Wellsville 51

Wellsville — The Eagles (1-5) came up short in a fast-paced, physical game against Anderson County. Each team shot more than 30 free throws, but Anderson County made more of them as it pulled ahead before halftime and never relinquished the lead.
