Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence needs volunteer basketball referees for their after-school programs’ Wednesday basketball games. Participating children are mostly ages 9-11. Games will be every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. at different school locations. For more information, call Roger Ross, program manger at the Boys and Girls Club, at 841-6854 or 423-3774.
  • Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., needs volunteers in several areas. More greeters are needed at the front door, particularly from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteers also are needed in the gift shop, Miss Lizzie’s Gifts, for both mornings and afternoons until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information about becoming a volunteer, call Patsy at 841-4109.
  • ICAN Friendly Visitors program is looking for individuals to volunteer one or two hours a week to assist older people who live independently. This requires an ongoing commitment to a person who might need someone to help with groceries or a friendly face to visit with once a week. Call 749-2005 for more information.
  • The Safe Winter Walkways project has received a good response for volunteers to assist a senior citizen or person with disability with shoveling snow. A few more volunteers are needed in East Lawrence neighborhoods, including east of downtown and around Kennedy School near the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Volunteers may call 832-3338 to sign up.
