For 20 minutes, Matt Parker’s last game in the Seabury Academy gym was misery.

Then Parker, a 6-foot-2 senior, scored 15 points in the last 12 minutes, lifting the Seahawks to a 52-40 come-from-behind basketball victory Friday night over Topeka Heritage Christian.

“Everything was sparked by him,” Seabury coach Marcus Heckman said of Parker, who drilled a trio of three-point goals to spark an 18-0 run that buried the visiting Eagles.

Parker sat most of the first half after picking up three early fouls, and he didn’t do much early in the second half either as the Topekans raced to a 28-20 lead with 4:21 showing on the third-quarter clock.

Five seconds later, Heckman called time, made an adjustment to counter the Heritage zone and told Parker to shoot over it.

Parker wasted little time. About 30 seconds later, he drilled a three-pointer, and the Seahawks were off to the races. Six minutes of sizzle and Seabury was leading 38-28, thanks to its 18-0 blitz.

The sizz featured all three of Parker’s three-pointers and two by junior Adam Davis, who led Seabury (7-13) with 20 points.

“We play on momentum a lot,” Heckman said, “and tonight was evidence of that. We gave Matt the green light, and after he hit the second one I let the kids go.”

Heritage Christian (13-10) withered under the late onslaught in the Seahawks’ regular-season finale.

Next for the Seahawks will be a Class 1A sub-state game Tuesday against Kansas School for the Deaf in Olathe. Seabury dropped two early season games to KSD, but posted a 45-42 over the Olathe school a couple of weeks ago.

“It took a late run similar to the one tonight to win that one,” Heckman said. “They’re small and quick and we’re not quick, but I feel good about it, especially coming off a game like this.”

Seabury girls 31, Heritage Christian 7

Senior Laura Frizell bowed out with 18 points, and the Seahawks held the young Eagles without a field goal until 31/2 minutes remained.

“It really meant a lot,” Frizell said about her last home game. “I wanted to focus on having a good time.”

Heritage Christian (3-21) started three freshmen and two sophomores and didn’t record a basket until Rebecca Grantz scored from underneath with 3:36 remaining. That bucket also accounted for the Eagles’ entire second-half scoring output. Heritage Christian misfired on 33 shots and on 14 of 19 free-throw attempts.

“That was one of our better defensive efforts of the year,” Seabury coach Nick Taylor said. “Our seniors really got after it. They didn’t want to go out with a loss.”

Seabury led by just seven (12-5) at halftime, but the Seahawks outscored the Eagles, 12-0, in the third quarter and Frizell accounted for half of those points.

The Seabury girls (8-11) also have a 1A sub-state date Tuesday at KSD, a team the Seahawks already have waxed three times.

“This game was a big help for us going into regionals,” Taylor said. “We’ve beaten KSD three times, but it’s hard to defeat a team four times.”

If the Seahawks knock off KSD, their dubious prize would be a trip to Centralia to meet the unbeaten and two-time defending state 1A champions.
