Haskell University’s women’s basketball team defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan, 65-55, on Friday at Coffin Complex.

Haskell trailed, 30-25, at halftime, as 5-foot-8 All-American Britney Kannaday burned the Fightin’ Indians for 17 points in the first half.

Kannaday had just six points in the second half after Haskell switched to a zone.

“That was the name of the game, the difference in the game. We went to a wide zone and got somebody in her face,” coach Phil Homeratha said.

Maria Stevens, who is averaging 11 points a game off 60 percent shooting, scored 21 points, with five blocks.

“She is shooting real well,” Homeratha said. “She’s got real good hands and went away from the basket and got around her defender a couple of times.”

Samantha Pete had 16 points, while Lucita Yesslith had 12 points and six rebounds. Amber Tecumseh was credited for a strong job on defense versus Kannaday.

Haskell (9-13) plays 17-3 College of Ozarks at 3 p.m. today at Coffin Complex.

Haskell Men 106, Oklahoma Wesleyan 87

Brandon Yellowbird-Stevens scored 24 points, and Corey Ladson added 20 as five Haskell Indian Nations University men’s basketball players reached double figures.

Jamison King had 14 points, and Lati Hill and Topah Spoonhunter added 10 each for HINU.

“We played well tonight,” Haskell coach Jamie Morrison said. “We ran, and that was our plan, to run, run, run.”

Haskell had a season-high 25 assists and a season-low 10 turnovers. HINU hit 63.9 percent of its second-half field goals and 52.0 percent overall.

Jamie Peterson, a junior forward from Lawrence High, had eight points for Oklahoma Wesleyan.
