Emporia State University announced area students who made the fall 2004 honor roll. Sean Patton was named to the dean’s list at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., by earning a 3.0 grade-point average. Patton, a 2001 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of Rick Bryant and Donna Patton-Bryant, of Lawrence.

Martha Boatright, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Marona Graham-Bailey, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. She is the daughter of Ronald Bailey, Knoxville, Tenn., and Maryemma Graham, Lawrence.

Cuyler Halpin, Lawrence, has made the dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester at the University of Dubuque in Iowa by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Zachery Parks, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

Keith and Josalie Church, Ottawa, announce the birth of their daughter, Katelyn Isabelle Church, born Jan. 26, 2005, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. She has a brother, Zak Church, 17 months.

Grandparents are John and Karla Autry, Olathe; Orville and Mary Jane Church, Lawrence; and Doug and Janell Pritchard, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Dottie Puckett, Baldwin; Ira and Elsie Moore, Lawrence; and Richard Folks Sr., Bonner Springs.

Sharyn Lewin, a graduate of Lawrence High School and Kansas University Medical School, is completing her residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Washington University in St. Louis. She has been selected as “Resident of the Year” in the second and fourth year of her residency. She will be inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in March. She has been selected to receive the President’s Award at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecological Oncologists in March in Miami. Lewin has been selected to do a four-year fellowship in gynecology oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, beginning in July. She is the daughter of Tom and Phyllis Lewin, Lawrence.

Southwest Junior High School placed second in the K-12 team competition at the Wellsville High School Chess tournament Feb. 5.

In the K-8 Division, South Junior High School placed second and Wakarusa Valley School came in third.

Thomas Reams, a SWJHS student, finished first in the K-12 section. Other medal winners were: Sean Stenseng, SWJHS, third; Roy Wedge, Central Junior High School, seventh; Thomas Clark, SWJHS, 11th; and Kellen Cross, SWJHS, 16th.

Students who received medals in the K-8 section were: Austin Clapp, Quail Run School, fourth; Garrick Clapp, Quail Run, fifth; Jessica Newman, SJHS, sixth; Kenny Blevins, Wakarusa Valley, seventh; Nate McFadden, SJHS, 11th; Ryan Bellinger, Broken Arrow School, 12th; Lucas Suchy, Wakarusa Valley, 16th; and Arianne Suchy, SJHS, 19th.

A team from Cordley School also competed in the tournament.
