LHS girls edge Indians

? Megan Klingler scored 14 points to pace three Lawrence High players in double figures, and the LHS girls basketball team held off Shawnee Mission North, 51-47, on Monday.

“I felt this was a really good win,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “I watched (SM North) beat Free State by 15 last week, so they’re a good team. And this was on the road for us, so those wins are tough to come by. We beat them in double-overtime last year, so I knew they’d be gunning for us.”

Lacey Elmore scored 13 and Sydney Wilson added 12 for Lawrence (9-5).

“It was a really solid win for us,” Mallory said. “It was a good team effort. Our scoring was way more spread out than it usually is. We did a good job of spreading the ball around, finding the open man. And we hit some big shots down the stretch. You have to do that to win on the road in the Sunflower League.”

The Lions trailed, 13-10, after the first quarter but rallied for a 28-26 halftime lead. SM North forged a tie in the second half, but never regained the lead.

Lawrence high six of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Indians at bay.

Mallory singled out Elmore, who hit a three-pointer and was 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

“That’s the second game in a row she was a difference-maker for us,” Mallory said. “She was the big one for us.”

Lawrence will play host Friday to Olathe East.
