Matthew Mauldin and Tammy Wright, both of Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Ragan Nichole Mauldin, born Jan. 24, 2005, at Overland Park Medical Center.

Maternal grandparents are Richard Wright, Overbrook, and Sheryl Wright, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are John and Chala LaRocca, Lawrence, and the late Loyce Mauldin. Great-grandmother is Sylvia Coe, Topeka.

An open house celebrating the 100th birthday of Raymond Pearson will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Lodge in Baldwin. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.

Pearson was born Feb. 12, 1905, in Baldwin. Hosts for the open house will be his children, Ralph and Marja Pearson, Baldwin, and Mary and Elton Haid, Lawrence; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Trudy Carter, Overbrook, graduated summa cum laude from Central Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She also was listed on the dean’s list for the fall 2004 semester by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Samantha Frisbie, Lawrence, also made the dean’s list by receiving at least a 3.5 GPA.

Nicole Pulley, Lawrence, made the president’s honor roll during the fall 2004 semester at Cowley College, Arkansas City, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Assn. is having a recital at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. Steven Miles, Lawrence, recently earned an award for logging 250 hours in the American Quarter Horse Assn. Horseback Riding program. The program recognizes and rewards AQHA members for time spent with their American Quarter horses in activities such as trail rides, working cattle, pleasure driving and simply riding.

Rachel McCarthy James, a freshman at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va., has been named an honor student for the 2004 fall semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. James is the daughter of Susan McCarthy and Bill James, Lawrence, and is a Free State High School graduate.

Quail Run School students Harrison Helmick and Keil Eggers participated in the High School Division of the Rockhurst Chess Tournament. Harrison took 20th place and Keil placed 21st. As a team, they earned fifth place.

Lawrence schools garnered several trophies at the Onaga High School Chess Tournament on Jan. 29. Southwest Junior High School finished second in the K-12 Division, and Wakarusa Valley School placed second in the K-6 Division. Third-place trophies were given to South Junior High School in K-8 and Quail Run School in K-6.

Jessica Newman, of SJHS, placed first in K-8 and Cole Reams, of Quail Run, placed first in K-6. Sean Stenseng, of SWJSH finished third in K-12.

Other Lawrence medalists in K-12 were: Thomas Clark, SWJHS, sixth; Roy Wedge, Central Junior High, seventh; Kellen Cross, SWJHS, ninth; Keely Stenseng, SWJHS, 11th; and Thomas Reams, SWJHS, 15th. Medalists in the K-6 Division were: Kenny Blevins, Wakarusa Valley, second; Cal Young, Wakarusa Valley, fifth; Robert Newman, Wakarusa Valley, sixth; and George Wedge, Cordley School, eighth.

Austen Twombley, a student at Kennedy School, won a free-throw shooting contest for his age division by making 22 of 25 free throws. This event was sponsored by the Elks Club. Since Austen won the district and regional contests, the Ottawa district of the Elks Club will sponsor Austen in the state tournament on Feb. 12 in Newton.

John Darling and Denise Perpich, Lawrence, and Travis Kurtz, Overbrook, made the president’s honor roll during the fall 2004 semester at Hutchinson Community College and Area Vocational School. They earned a 4.0 grade-point average.

Leah Clay, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the fall 2004 semester at Cloud County Community College, Concordia, by earning at least a 3.6 grade-point average.

Several Lawrence chess players won medals at the Rockhurst High School chess tournament Jan. 22 in Kansas City, Mo.

In the K-12 Division, Thomas Clark, of Southwest Junior High School, placed 11th; Roy Wedge, of Central Junior High School, finished 12th; and Harrison Helmick, of Quail Run School, came in 20th.

In the K-8 Division, Kenny Blevins, of Wakarusa Valley School, finished sixth; and Nate McFadden, of South Junior High School, came in 15th.

In the K-5 Divison, Wakarusa Valley’s Lucas Suchy and Owen McFadden finished 11th and 17th, respectively.

Heather Meehan, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the fall 2004 quarter at Southeast Community College-Lincoln by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

Craig Barnes, Lawrence, has received the Outstanding Student Academic Scholarship from Bethel College for the 2005-06 academic year. The scholarship is valued at $19,200 during a four-year period. Barnes is a senior at Free State High School.

Academic scholarships at Bethel are based on high school grade-point average and college entrance exams.

Laurie Wilson, De Soto, and Elizabeth Barfield, Lawrence, made the president’s list by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.
