Novice bakers not to blame for home ec fire

It sounds like a baking lesson gone bad.

But a fire reported Wednesday morning in the home economics classroom of Perry-Lecompton High School was caused by insulation catching fire, emergency workers said. No one was injured.

The fire started shortly before 9 a.m. when work being done by construction crews caused insulation in a wall to catch fire, according to David Warriner, fire chief for Kentucky Township and the City of Perry. Firefighters arrived and found fire in the wall and ceiling of the home economics room and in the wall of the adjacent music room.

The fire was out by 10 a.m., and students returned to classes. There was no estimated amount of damage as of Wednesday afternoon.

Agencies that responded included the Kentucky Township/Perry department, the fire departments for Kaw, Rural, Fairview and Ozawkie townships, and Jefferson County’s emergency management, sheriff’s department and EMS.
