Brandon Rush is not yet an official member of Kansas University’s men’s basketball team, but he is now officially a KU student.

Rush, a 6-foot-6 guard from Kansas City, Mo., on Friday enrolled at Strong Hall on the KU campus.

Now a member of the Jayhawk student body, he on Friday was not declared academically eligible for a scholarship by the NCAA Clearinghouse, though Rush believes that will happen soon.

“I’m enrolled,” Rush said Friday when contacted by James Sido of Wichita-TV KAKE, formerly of Lawrence’s Sunflower Broadband Channel 6.

“I’m hoping to be cleared on Monday. That’s what the clearinghouse people told me,” added Rush, who has been unavailable for comment through most all of his recruitment this past month.

Rush had earlier been reluctant to enroll, wanting to first learn for sure whether he’d be cleared to play college basketball by the NCAA.

Sources close to the Rush family say the clearinghouse has received all of his transcript and grade information from the four high schools he attended and could be close to rendering a decision.

Rush now can start attending class on Monday, though he could wait until he’s cleared for an athletic scholarship. He is not planning on attending college unless he can play hoops, his ultimate goal an early trip to the NBA.

Rush, who averaged 21 points, six rebounds and five a game last season at Mt. Zion Academy in Durham, N.C., visited KU, Illinois and Indiana in a 10-day span this summer. He declared for the NBA Draft but withdrew his name after being told by NBA officials he would not be a first-round pick.

KU coach Bill Self has declined comment on the situation in accordance with NCAA rules.
