The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has announced health code violations at two Lawrence area restaurants.

J.B. Stout’s, 721 Wakarusa Drive, and Joy Garden, of Baldwin, were both fined for health code violations.

Inspections at J.B. Stouts in April and May found raw meat stored above ready-to-eat deli meats and proper temperatures of foods weren’t maintained. A $1,000 fine has been levied.

KDHE inspectors said Joy Garden employees had not maintained proper temperature of foods during April and May visits. They also found signs of rodents at the restaurant during both inspections. A $1,000 fine was authorized.

A Joy Garden manager had no comment. He said the fine will be paid.

Fee Monshizadeh, general manager at J.B. Stouts, said the restaurant was appealing the fine.

“I’m really disappointed by this,” he said. “One of those violations was because things were misplaced. I really think they (KDHE) should be educating the industry sometimes rather than criticizing it.”
