Thieves aided by warmer weather

Police warn against leaving windows open, unlocked

Flowers are blooming. Bees are buzzing. And Lawrence Police say spring weather is helping create easy targets for burglars.

“When it starts getting nice outside, people start leaving their windows and garage doors open,” said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman. “It’s not a safe thing to do.”

There were four residential burglaries Wednesday morning in a roughly one-block area near the Kansas University campus: two in the same apartment building in the 900 block of Mississippi Street, one in the 1000 block of Mississippi and one in the 1000 block of Indiana Street.

In three of those cases, the burglar entered through an open window. In the other case, the burglar came through an unlocked rear door. Items stolen included prescription pills, watches, a laptop computer and an Apple iPod.

Also, there have been four thefts of golf clubs from open garages in recent weeks, Ward said, including one discovered April 6 in the 3400 block of Riverview Road and one discovered Monday in the 4400 block of Nicklaus Drive.

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS.
