4-H and FCE News

The Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club had its third annual Spirit Night during its March 14 meeting. Ashley Lesser, junior president, presided.

Spirit winners were Daisy Johnson, Kennedy O’Dell and Mary Stewart.

The club is considering a visit to the Ronald McDonald House in Topeka for an educational tour.

The Four Leaf Clover 4-H Club met March 14.

Erin Ashcraft, president, and guest Michelle Colgan gave a presentation on 4-H camp.

Douglas County 4-H groups will be helping with Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen on April 30. The club will provide cookies and other items. Paula Aiken, 4-H leader, recognized members who participated in Regional 4-H Day. The club will be collecting donations for Lawrence’s Relay for Life, which will be June 10-11. The club’s goal is to collect $1,500.

Members enrolled in the junior’s foods group gave a project talk on safety in the kitchen.

The Vinland Family and Community Education Unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Mariann Bradley. The lesson will be given by Elizabeth Hemphill on Papua New Guinea. Roll call will be answered with “What does ACWW mean?”

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council met April 11 in Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Myrna Hartford, president, announced that FCE District Recognition Day will May 5 in Building 21 at the fairgrounds. The theme will be “I Love Country.”

The program will be:

  • “Traffic Safety On Country Roads” by Tom Mulinazzi.
  • 1930s and 1940s style show. Martha Pierce will be narrator, and Janis Hutchison will play the piano.
  • Noon buffet.
  • Performance by the South Junior High School honors choir.
  • “Humor, Laugh and Play-For Better Health” by Bill Peterson.

The registration deadline is April 25. To attend, send a personal check for $10.50 payable to Douglas County FCE Council to: Eda Thomason, 625 East 1450 Road, Lawrence 66046.

The next FCE Council meeting will be at 9 a.m. June 7 in the Deal Six Auditorium.

The next Red Cross blood drive will be Thursday at First Christian Church. Kaw Valley and India FCE units will provide cookies.
