Fast-paced musical kicks off this weekend

The musical comedy “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” features more than 60 different roles played by four actors, in a series of skits about love, marriage and all the sticky stuff in between.

The fast-paced revue opens Friday and runs for three weekends at Lawrence Community Theatre, 1501 N.H. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 10. Tickets are $10-$18 and can be purchased by calling the theater at 843-7469.

For Your Ears Only sale to benefit Audio-Reader

Audio-Reader is having its For Your Ears Only benefit sale from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in Buildings 1 and 2 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

New and used audio-visual products will be sold to raise money for Audio-Reader, a radio service for the blind and print-disabled. Some of this year’s featured items include 4-track reel-to-reel tapes from the Beatles and other artists, the entire “Twilight Zone” series on VHS and an oak card catalog.

Admission is free on Saturday but guests at the sneak preview on Friday will be charged $5.

KU opens Big 12 play against Red Raiders

Kansas University’s football team returns home to open the Big 12 Conference season on Saturday. Mark Mangino’s Jayhawks will tackle Texas Tech in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium.

Rendezvous to recall days of trapping, trading

Mountain men and French pelt traders will be among the characters in Lecompton at the first “Bald Eagle Rendezvous,” a historical re-enactment of Kansas’ days as a center for fur trapping and trading.

Starting Friday, actors will turn Bald Eagle River View Park into an early-19th century trading post. The re-enactment will feature period lodging and demonstrations in campfire cooking, American Indian crafts, gunsmithing and tomahawk throwing.

The camp will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.

Auctions to raise funds for Humane Society

The Lawrence Humane Society will have its Pawsible Dream Benefit Auction at 6 p.m. Friday at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive.

The event will feature both a silent and a live auction. Auction items include sports memorabilia, the work of local artists, gift certificates from area businesses and pet products.

Proceeds from the event help fund the society’s services, which include sheltering more than 6,000 dogs, cats and other small animals each year.

The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. The live auction begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the event cost $15 for a single or two for $25. Tickets can be purchased through the Lawrence Humane Society in advance and will be available at the door.
