Public library to hold fall book sale

The Friends of the Public Library will hold their fall book sale later this month in a tent at Seventh and Kentucky streets.

The sale will start on Thursday, Sept. 30, with a members only night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Memberships are available at $10 for individuals and $15 for families and may be obtained at the library circulation desk, 707 Vt.

The sale will continue on the following days: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 1; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 2; 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 3 (half-price day); 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 5, ($7 per bag of books); 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 7, ($5 per bag of books); and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 9, books given away.

Patrons who use mobility aids such as wheelchairs or crutches may call the library to make special arrangements at 843-3833, ext. 123.

In addition to books, records, tapes, videos, CDs, magazines and maps will also be sold.

Veterans Affairs

Town hall meeting scheduled for tonight

Leavenworth — The Department of Veterans Affairs will conduct a town hall meeting tonight at the River Front Community Center.

Retired Brig. Gen. John Nicholson, undersecretary for memorial affairs in the VA, will brief the public on VA burial benefits and the status of the VA’s National Cemetery Administration. Other local and regional VA representatives will attend to answer questions about other issues.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the community center at 123 S. Esplanade.

Friends of the Kaw sponsors float trips

Friends of the Kaw is sponsoring a series of upcoming float trips on the Kansas River.

Here are the dates and locations:

  • Saturday, an afternoon float from Manhattan to St. George.
  • Sunday, a morning float from St. George to Wamego.
  • Oct. 2, an afternoon float from Mud Creek east of Lawrence to Eudora.
  • Oct. 3, a morning float from Cedar Creek, east of De Soto, to Nelson Island, west of Interstate 435.

Each float trip will feature an educational “sandbar seminar” and hot dog roast during a mid-trip rest stop.
