Rich Davis, John Emerson and Jack Schreiner each turned in their scorecards after the first round of the LAGA Men’s Senior Golf Championship with the same thought: Somebody’s going to post a better score.

Schreiner was right, but barely. His round of 5-over-par 77 at Eagle Bend Golf Course put him in a tie with Scot Buxton for third place in the championship flight. Davis and Emerson each shot 75 and stand atop the leaderboard going into today’s final round at Alvamar Golf Course.

Matt Dengler posted a 79 and is fifth, followed by Rich High (80), two-time tournament champion Jim Hill (81) and Tom Taylor (82).

“I should have played better,” Davis said. “The course was fine. It’s a 20-mph wind, but we’re used to that.”

The relatively high numbers largely were due to the blustery conditions. Stiff breezes caused the trees to sway, turning Eagle Bend into Eagle Wind.

“It was beautiful, but … it was tough,” said Schreiner, the boys basketball and boys golf coach at Free State High. “But the wind’s blowing for everybody, so that’s the best thing.”

Emerson earned birdies on the ninth and 16th holes, but had his troubles with a double-bogey on the seventh hole.

“That’s about what I shoot,” Emerson said of his 75. “I don’t shoot 72s that often.”

Morning rain and lightning delayed some tee times by as much as two hours.

“I suppose for some people, it would mess them up, but that’s no one’s fault,” Emerson said. “The weather does that. You just have to bear with it.”

Last year’s winner, Mike DuPree, lost his amateur status last fall after becoming a teaching professional at Alvamar.
