Air ambulance transports U.S. 59 accident victim

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers were on the scene of a one-car injury accident Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 59 near the Franklin County line.

No information was available about the accident because investigators were still busy at the scene south of Lawrence.

A man who lives near the accident scene, however, said a woman was extricated from the car. She was taken from the scene in an air ambulance helicopter, but it was unclear to what hospital.

The accident occurred shortly before 10 p.m.

Brothers sentenced for growing marijuana

Two brothers were sentenced Tuesday to probation for growing marijuana at their home in the 2500 block of Alabama Street.

Judge Jack Murphy sentenced Bryan Delap, 29, and Christopher Delap, 26, to 15 months in the Department of Corrections but suspended the sentences and ordered them to supervised probation for 18 months.

Murphy also ordered the brothers to complete 80 hours of community service.

Police searched their home last October and seized 36 marijuana plants, some as large as six feet tall, and recovered more than $2,000 worth of growing equipment.

Sons of Union Veterans to meet at museum

A meeting of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

Mike Gibson will talk about a relative who was captured and sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison. He also will show a diary of events that took place there.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

‘Apprentice’ winner plans KU appearance

Bill Rancic, winner of last season’s “The Apprentice” reality TV show, will speak next month at Kansas University.

Rancic will speak at 8 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Kansas Union Ballroom. His appearance is part of Homecoming Week, which also will bring comedian Bill Cosby to Allen Fieldhouse on Oct. 5.

Rancic’s appearance is free and open to the public. Ticket prices and availability for the Cosby show should be announced later this week.

Rancic beat out his competition on the NBC show, in which billionaire Donald Trump put contestants through a series of business-related tests to determine who would be hired to lead one of Trump’s companies.
