Tyler Morgan, Lawrence, recently began studies as a first-year student at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY. A Free State High School graduate, he was selected to the attend the highly selective, residential liberal arts college from a pool of 4,444 applicants. He joins a class of 476. He is the son of Beverly and Robert Morgan, Lawrence.

Chad and Angie Sommer, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Carley Ryan, on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Overland Park. Carley has one brother, Dylan, 3. Paternal grandparents are John Sommer, Chandler, Ariz., and Linda Adkinson, Waverly. Maternal grandparents are Dennis and Patty Buchholz, Eudora. Great-grandparents are Wanda Beach, Eudora, and Viola Sommer and Mildred Adkinson, both of Garnett.

Heather Borland, Lawrence, has been awarded a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago in 2001. Borland has accepted a position with the State Department in Washington. She is the daughter of Jana Montgomery.

Daniel Vannicola, Lecompton, graduated Aug. 27 from Universal Technical Institute, Houston. He studied automotive, diesel and industrial technology and graduated Alpha Beta Kappa. He was on the director’s honors list, received a perfect attendance award and five student of the course awards. Vannicola is a 2003 Perry-Lecompton High School graduate. He is the son of Phillip and Gayle Vannicola, Lecompton.

Sue Finley Evans, Lawrence, will be a featured presenter at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21, at the Pembroke Hill School, 400 W. 51st St., Kansas City, Mo. The presentation, “What is the Suzuki Method of Music Teaching?,” is open to the public. Evans is a Lawrence Suzuki piano teacher.

Jacob and Jaime Hoffman, Westminster, Colo., announce the birth of a daughter, Hannah Beck, on Aug. 16, 2004, at North Suburban Medical Center, Denver. Paternal grandparents are Scot and Donna Hoffman, Lawrence. Maternal grandparents are Mike and Cheryl Bitner, Phoenix, Md., and Diana Forry, York, Pa. Lia DeRoin, Lawrence, was named to the spring 2004 dean’s list at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., by attaining at least a 3.75 grade-point average. DeRoin is in the School of Music.

Candice Cesare, Lawrence, has pledged with Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Kansas University. She is a 2004 graduate of Free State High School. She is the daughter of David and Denise Cesare, Lawrence.

A retirement reception for Miss Aylo Lippe will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Veritas Christian School. At 3 p.m. a brief presentation will be made.

Lippe recently retired after almost 50 years of teaching. She began her career at Crowder School, a one-room school in rural Douglas County, followed by positions in Gardner and Topeka. She attended language training in Costa Rica and moved to Puerto Rico where she taught for 20 years at Wesleyan Academy Missionary School. Lippe started teaching at Douglas County Christian School, now Veritas Christian School, in Lawrence in 1988.
