Weekend weather fine for tailgating

Heading out to area football games tonight and Saturday? Leave the jackets and rain ponchos behind.

“Shorts and T-shirts should be just fine,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist, who’s expecting dry warm weather for tonight’s Lawrence High School game and for Kansas University’s home game Saturday evening.

Sayers predicts sunny and mild conditions today, with the temperature reaching 80 by noon and 87 by late afternoon, with low humidity levels and winds from the south, 8 to 18 mph.

“It’s a fantastic finale to your work week,” he said

By the 7:30 p.m. kickoff for tonight’s LHS home football game against Olathe North at Haskell Stadium, the temperature will be 79, with winds 10 mph from the south, Sayers said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 58 by early Saturday morning. Saturday’s high will be 87, with sunny skies and winds 5 to 15 mph.

The temperature will be 83 by the 6 p.m. kickoff time for the KU-Toledo home game at Memorial Stadium, with winds out of the south, about 10 mph.

“It’s great weather to get out to the hill and enjoy a little football,” Sayers said. “It’s great weather for tailgating.”

Sunday morning’s low will be 60, with the high reaching 88 by Sunday afternoon under continued sunny skies.

Sayers said there’s one consistent theme for the next several days — warm, dry conditions. Afternoon temperatures will be in the high 80s through mid week.

“We’re probably not going to see the rain until the end of next week,” he said.

The last major rainfalls Lawrence had was from Aug. 23 through Aug. 28, when the city received 6.77 inches of rain.

“Since then we have only seen .56 (of an inch) that came Sunday evening,” Sayers said.
“It looks like that trend is going to continue for the next several days.”
