Mr. Maxwell died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his home.

He was born Feb. 16, 1949, in Lawrence, the son of Jack C. and Barbara J. Long Maxwell.

He attended Lawrence High School, and later Colorado State University on a football scholarship. He graduated in 1976 from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He moved to Ulysses in 1981.

He practiced optometry for five years in Garden City, and was a founding member of High Plains Eye Society. He was also a former member of Ulysses Rotary Club, Grant County Chamber of Commerce and was a Boy Scout leader. He had served on the board of the Kansas Optometric Assn. and was a member of the American Optometric Assn., Sports Vision Center and KOA Political Action Committee.

He married Darel R. Armstrong on July 3, 1989, at Lake Tahoe, Nev. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Jack C. III, Ulysses; a daughter, Carson Rae, Ulysses; his mother, Salina; two sisters, Karen Kessler, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kristin Seaton, Salina; and a brother, Scott, Garden City.
