Paul Rehak

Mr. Rehak died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at his home of complications from a heart attack.

He was born March 8, 1954, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the son of Stansilav and Dorothy Rehak.

He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in classical studies and classical archaeology from the University of Michigan in 1976. He received his master’s degree in 1980 and his doctorate in 1985, both from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.

From 1980 to 1981, Mr. Rehak was a John Williams White Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. He taught at Kansas University from 1986 to 1987 before teaching one-year stints at the College of Wooster in Ohio and American University of Paris before going on to Loyola University of Chicago, where he taught from 1989 to 1995. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Rehak taught occasional art and archaeology courses at Duke University. He returned to KU in 2001.

In March, Mr. Rehak was promoted to associate professor of classics and received tenure at KU.

Mr. Rehak served on committees, traveled and lectured for the Archaeological Institute of America. He was president and vice president of its local societies in Chicago, North Carolina and Kansas City, Mo.

He was co-editor for book reviews for the American Journal of Archaeology. He served as secretary of the Alumni Association of the American School of Classical Studies.

Survivors include his partner, John Younger; his parents, of Ann Arbor; two brothers, Thomas, Columbia, Mo., and Robert, Bloomington, Ind.; and two sisters, Joan Rehak and Mary Rehak, both of Ann Arbor.
