Haskell hammers Trinity, 57-0

After last week’s heartbreaking 7-6 loss at Waldorf College, Haskell Indian Nations University’s football team took out its frustrations — again — on Trinity Bible College.

In almost an exact repeat performance from a year ago, the Indians defeated the Lions, 57-0, to improve to 1-1. Last season, HINU prevailed, 60-0.

“It’s relieving, and it feels good stat-wise,” Haskell coach Eric Brock said. “Hopefully this starts a little steamrolling. I think this gives guys a little bit of confidence going into next week.”

The Indians were glad to get win No. 1 out of the way, because next week they will travel to play No. 20-ranked McPherson.

Haskell received all of the offense it needed in the first half. Freshman running back Marcus Benally easily found holes in the Trinity defense, racking up 100 yards on 13 carries before halftime. Benally’s performance was capped by a one-yard touchdown that made the score 30-0 at the break.

Benally’s big first half was supplemented by an equally impressive performance by freshman quarterback Kaleb Harris. In his first home start for the Indians, Harris only played the first half, but had a one-yard scoring plunge and touchdown passes of 30 and 25 yards.

“Last week we really didn’t run the ball well, and we just decided we were gonna man up,” Harris said. “We have a real talented team and we just wanted to come out and score as many points as we can.”

The final exclamation point came early in the second half, as Cory Murphy ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

The Indians defense also did its part, not allowing Trinity past midfield in the second half. Junior linebacker A.J. Leading Fox had two sacks and broke up several plays in the backfield early on.

Haskell Indian Nations University wide receiver Cody Wilson, right, attempts to break free from Trinity Bible College's James Castillio during the first half. The Fightin' Indians cruised to a 57-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Haskell Stadium.

Don’t be fooled by the 57-0 score, though, as coach Brock will demand a much better performance next weekend against McPherson.

“I told my guys congratulations on the first win of 2004, but it wasn’t a perfect game by any means,” Brock said. “We missed some field goals, some PATs, had some bad snaps. They’re little things we need to work on to make sure our game’s at its top level, and that’s what it’s going to need to be at next week.”
