Cards blank Eagles

Eudora defense dominates in 21-0 win at Wellsville

? Even before Gregg Webb took over Eudora’s football program a couple of years ago, the Cardinals weren’t exactly known for kicking extra points.

Throw in Webb — who had produced a handful of state titles at Claflin behind a powerful running game — and EHS might just as well have dropped its field-goal formation from the playbook.

So Friday night when William Bock lined up for a 30-yarder in the third quarter of the Cardinals’ 21-0 season-opening victory over Wellsville, EHS fans had to be shaking their heads.

“Is this Eudora football?” asked a statistician on the sideline.

Bock, a senior who had played soccer the last three years for Eudora, missed the straight-on shot by less than a foot, but his fumble recovery in the end zone a minute later — and a dominating effort from the Cardinals defense — easily secured Eudora’s victory.

“Definitely a little retribution,” Bock said of his touchdown. “I just muffed that field goal. I was pretty nervous.”

And why wouldn’t he be.

Webb can’t even remember the last time a kicker on his team hit a field goal. He does, however, remember the last time he lined up to kick one almost seven years ago.

“We were playing this playoff game in 1997 against Saint Francis, and we put in our unit late in the game,” Webb said, with a sly smile.

And …

Eudora High defensive back Mark Abel (20) breaks up a pass to Wellsville's Danny Erlacher. The Cardinals knocked off the Eagles, 21-0, Friday night at Wellsville.

“Time ran out,” he quipped.

But Bock actually will get the benefit of the doubt.

“He’s got a great leg, and we have a lot of confidence in him,” Webb said. “Once he gets the feel for it, I fully expect him to make most everyone from even 40 yards out.”

If the Cardinals continue to play with the kind of defensive efficiency they showed against the Eagles, Eudora might well be on its way to a fifth-straight district title.

Of course, that’s getting ahead of things, and Webb said there was plenty of miscues — especially offensively — that left him more than a little winded.

But then again, at least offensively speaking, neither team blew much smoke Friday as the two squads combined for only 236 yards.

But a thick cloud of smog from the burnout contest of a downtown car show, created a burning smell over WHS.

In fact, the only thing more disturbing than the melted rubber might have been some of the hits the two defenses laid on.

Eudora, got an early touchdown on a deep pass by Kyle Brouhard to Joe Kaup.

From there the Cardinals forced the Eagles to cough up the ball seven times, and limited Wellsville to just 22 rushing yards on 32 carries.

Eudora High coach Gregg Webb reacts to a penalty during the first half of the Cardinals' 21-0 victory. EHS won its season opener Friday in Wellsville.

“We just didn’t take care of things mentally,” Wellsville coach Bill Oshel said. “We’re the kind of team that has to take care of the football, and we didn’t.”

Eudora did, when Brendan Jackson plunged in from three yards out in the third quarter, and Bock scooped up another loose ball for the score — and then kicked a 25-yard extra point.

But even that probably won’t make Webb change his stance on field goals.

“No, not at all,” Webb said.
