Despite controversy, season-ticket sales soar

Controversy surrounding Kansas University’s priority point system hasn’t dampened demand for men’s basketball season-ticket sales.

“We’re very busy,” associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said. “I can tell we’re going to need some extra time to compile and verify all the point totals.”

The deadline for ordering tickets was Tuesday.

Marchiony said he expected all tickets that weren’t dedicated to either students or faculty and staff to sell out.

“There won’t be any left over,” he said.

The announcement comes as KU grapples with its first season under the points system, which awards fans for donations as well as being season-ticket holders in sports other than basketball.

It’s possible, Marchiony said, that someone who orders tickets may not have enough points to get tickets.

“The cutoff point, I think, is around 100 points,” Marchiony said. “But everybody who had tickets last year and who gave at least $100 this year will get tickets.”

Tickets, he said, should be mailed by “early to mid-October.”

Though most ticket buyers have a general idea of where they’ll be sitting, they won’t know their exact locations until they receive their tickets.

Also, order forms have been sent to more than 800 KU and KU Medical School faculty, staff and retirees who had tickets last year.

“The bulk of them went out yesterday and today,” Marchiony said. “They should all be out by tomorrow.”

Faculty, staff and retirees are not subject to the priority point system. Those who had tickets last year have the option of renewing their tickets for seats in three, second-tier corner sections.

Faculty, staff and retirees who did not have tickets last year will have the option of taking part in a lottery for 800 quarter-season tickets.

“The lottery will be sometime in September,” said Kathy Reed, an administrative specialist at the SenEx office and a member of the Basketball Ticket Committee.
