How they scored

First Quarter

1:13 — Bret Culbertson 22 field goal. Kyle Tucker’s punt deep in Jayhawk territory was blocked by Iowa State’s Todd Blythe, setting up first-and-goal for the Cyclones from the KU nine-yard line. ISU was unable to pound it in, though, and a third-down play was stopped for a loss by Rodney Harris. Culbertson nailed the short field goal to put the Cyclones up. (Iowa State 3, Kansas 0).

Second Quarter

6:17 — Brent Curvey 30 fumble return. After Adam Barmann left the game because of an injury to his right arm, Luke came in for four plays to finish a drive in the second quarter. His last two were fumbles, thanks in part to Iowa State’s massive pass rush. On third down, Luke appeared to try to throw under pressure, but the ball squirted out of his grasp, and Curvey picked it up and ran for the score. Culbertson kick. (Iowa State 10, Kansas 0).

Third Quarter

2:27 — Bret Culbertson 34 field goal. Iowa State moved the ball efficiently on the ground, but as with the theme of the game, couldn’t produce an offensive touchdown out of it. A six-yard pass from Bret Meyer to James Wright put the Cyclones at the nine, but they got no further. (Iowa State 13, Kansas 0).

Fourth Quarter

3:06 — Mark Simmons 20 pass from Jason Swanson. KU’s third quarterback of the day finally found his form with the air attack, completing three passes for 48 yards in a seven-play, 52-yard drive. The junior found Lyonel Anderson for a 21-yard gain and Brandon Rideau for a seven-yard gain on fourth down, then threw a strike to Mark Simmons in the back corner of the end zone for KU’s first — and only — score. Scott Webb kick. (Iowa State 13, Kansas 7).
