Bulldogs keep rolling

Baldwin seeks seventh straight crown

Baldwin High’s cross country juggernaut made it through the Frontier League and Class 4A regional meets with some pretty impressive streaks intact.

The Bulldogs will try to add to their tradition today during the 4A state meet at Wamego.

“We don’t have to do anything supernatural,” Baldwin coach Mike Spielman said. “If we go out and run our race, we’ll be right there.”

Baldwin’s boys have been right there the last six times the state championship trophy has been handed out. The Bulldogs have won nine consecutive league titles, eight straight regional titles and will be going for their seventh state title in a row today.

Baldwin won the Frontier League meet Oct. 14 at Rim Rock Farm when Keith Cowart finished second to De Soto’s Casey Johnson in 16:58.23. Sam Hinton, Zac Towns, Grant Catloth and Chris Elniff swept fourth through seventh for BHS, and three other Bulldogs — Brian Gerstner (14th), Dustin Schiller (15th) and Spencer Wilson (18th) finished in the top 20.

BHS won the team title with a minuscule 24 points. Runner-up Gardner-Edgerton had 92 points.

It was more of the same Saturday at the regional meet at Tonganoxie. The Bulldogs won with 26 points, 54 fewer than second-place De Soto.

Cowart won in 16:23, and Hinton (third), Elniff (fifth), Towns (sixth), Catloth (11th), Gerstner (12th) and Schiller (13th) all finished in the top 15.

Schiller is just a freshman, and Elniff a sophomore. But Baldwin has plenty of state experience. Gerstner was fifth last year, while Cowart was seventh. Towns also made it on the medals stand in 12th place.

Spielman, who is in his 13th year as head coach, said he expected Wamego, Buhler and Clay Center to be the biggest threats to the Bulldogs’ streak.

“We’re right in the hunt,” he said. “That’s where we want to be. We’re pretty healthy right now.”

Baldwin’s girls are working one streaks of their own. The Bulldogs have won seven straight league titles, five consecutive regional crowns and back-to-back state championships.

Freshman Heather Garcia has led the way this year, winning league and regional titles. Missy Westgate, who was 20th at regional, is the only senior in the Bulldogs’ top seven.

Sophomore Kelsey Verhaeghe (fourth), freshman Madison Shoemaker (seventh), sophomore Amanda Vander Tuig (10th) and junior Amy Craig (17th) also were in the top 20 at regional, while junior Denise Orloff was 27th.
