Candidate disputes videotaped comment

The race in the 10th Kansas House District is heating up over the questions of same-sex marriage, alleged lies and videotape.

Rep. Tom Holland, a Baldwin Democrat, said Monday that his Republican opponent, Rich Lorenzo, had misrepresented Holland’s record on same-sex marriage.

And there’s a videotape to prove it.

During a talk Sept. 19 at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road, Lorenzo said: “We need candidates in there that care about family values, that care about being pro-life, that care about marriage between a man and a woman. And, you know, my opponent is opposite of me on those.”

The church videotaped Lorenzo’s comments. He supports a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. But so does Holland.

During the last legislative session, Holland twice voted for a proposed constitutional amendment that would have banned same-sex marriage in Kansas. The measure, however, failed to gain the necessary two-thirds majority in the Legislature to get on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Holland expressed outrage that Lorenzo would misrepresent his position.

“If a candidate is being untruthful in a house of worship, how can we trust him as an elected official?” Holland said.

When asked about his statement, Lorenzo initially said he may have been misunderstood. Later, he said that he probably misspoke and apologized for it.

Lorenzo said he meant to say Holland held an opposing view from his on the issue of abortion.

Lorenzo said he opposed all abortions except in instances when the health of the mother is at stake. Holland said he supported current law, which prohibits so-called partial-birth abortions and prohibits late-term abortions unless the health of the mother is in jeopardy.

The two face off in the Nov. 2 election to represent Kansas House District 10, which includes southern Lawrence, Baldwin and portions of Douglas County.

Evelyn Horsley, a member of the church, said she had voted for Holland, but after Lorenzo spoke at the church she took Holland’s sign out of her yard. Then, when word got to Holland about what Lorenzo said, he visited with her and explained that he had voted for the ban on same-sex marriage.

Now, she said, she is supporting Holland again.

“I don’t know where Mr. Lorenzo got his information. He certainly misquoted. I just don’t think he researched his information,” she said.
