Election Day, Nov. 2, is just more than two weeks away and the Kids Voting Coalition is working to offer students in grades kindergarten through 12 an authentic voting experience at the polls. More individual volunteers are needed to help at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County, including rural voting locations. Shifts last approximately two hours and may be scheduled at a voting location convenient to the volunteer.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Salvation Army, 946 N.H., is looking for three to four new volunteers to serve in the meal program as the weather cools and the shelter and meal kitchen serves more people. Volunteers will help prepare and serve the evening meal to shelter guests. For more information, call Christine Cress, 843-4188.
  • Brandon Woods Retirement Community’s Halloween Carnival for elementary school-aged children will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at Brandon Woods, 1501 Inverness Drive. Volunteers are needed to add to the fun, help with games and activity booths for children, serve party treats, and other needs. Costumes are encouraged, but nothing too scary or gory. Call Carol Kellogg at 838-8000 for more information.
  • The Strategic Learning Center will have its second annual Band Together for Learning event on Jan. 22 at Liberty Hall, and volunteers are needed now to make the event a big success. Volunteers will assist with planning the event, making arrangements, fund-raising and collecting donations for the silent auction.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Strategic Learning Center, 1245 N.H., a nonprofit tutoring center providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to students of all ages and backgrounds. For more information, contact Rose Foster, 331-3236
