Veritas slips past WOL

? Jesse Schultz rushed for 239 yards, and Paul Kempf had 160 yards rushing and 155 receiving as Veritas Christian won an eight-man high school football slugout with Wichita Word of Life, 60-52, on Friday.

“It might not look like it, but our defense played well,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “We gave up some big plays, but when we needed a stop, we made stops. We showed a lot of heart. When we needed to answer them, we answered them.”

Schultz had 239 yards on 21 carries. Kempf had 160 yards on 16 carries and 155 receiving yards on seven catches. Kempf also had two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Veritas QB Casey Woods was 9-for-15 for 206 yards with two TDs, and Andrew Bartlow was in on 17 tackles.

Bennett lauded the play of offensive linemen Bartlow, Mark Randtke, Krestan Boutross, Michael Kay, Matt Mouncher and Ben Reynolds.

Veritas (7-1 overall, 3-0 in the Kansas Christian Athletic Assn.) will play host to St. Mary’s Academy in what will prove to be the league-championship game Friday. Kickoff will be 7 p.m. at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.
