Lions 2-1 at home quad

Lawrence High squandered a 16-10 lead Tuesday night in its first game against Manhattan and lost, 25-22.

The Lions weren’t about to concede the entire volleyball match.

“We had met them early this season,” senior Carolyn Raynes said. “We did the same thing in that match. We didn’t want to let it slip away again.”

Manhattan defeated LHS 25-16, 22-25, 25-22 Sept. 18 at the Maize Invitational. It was the Lions’ only loss in six matches at that event.

The Lions evened the score Tuesday at Lawrence High with a 22-25, 25-13, 25-14 victory against last year’s Class 6A champion.

Manhattan took game one after Jenna Koster rallied the Indians with nine straight service points for a 19-16 lead.

LHS (16-12) was clinging to a 13-10 lead in the second game before Drew DeBiasse gave the Lions a little breathing room with four service points. Lawrence went on to win 25-13 and never was challenged in the third game.

“That was a great win for us,” said LHS coach Jo Huntsinger, whose team plays Saturday at the Emporia Invitational. “Our kids played pretty well. I was very proud of their effort.”

Lawrence High started the night by rolling past Topeka Hayden 25-16, 25-15, but LHS could not complete the sweep of their home quad. The Lions had no answer for Washburn Rural (30-2) and 6-foot middle Kelsey Chipman.

“She’s probably the hardest hitter we’ve met,” Raynes said.

Washburn Rural made quick work of Manhattan, 25-21, 25-11, Hayden 25-13, 25-13, and LHS 25-18, 25-20.

Washburn Rural rolled through the first game against LHS and was up 10-6 in the second. LHS pulled within 13-12 on a block by reserve Jessica Vinoverski. Bonnie Toplikar tied it with a kill, and the Lions took a 14-13 lead when Rural’s Ashley Moser put her spike in the net.

LHS led at 15-14, 16-15 and 18-17 but could not pull away.

Lawrence High will play host to its final home quad at 5 p.m. Tuesday with Leavenworth Immaculata, Emporia and Topeka West.
