AG declines to provide details on Morton County investigation

? The state’s top legal official Wednesday declined to provide details on an investigation in southwestern Kansas where lawmen are digging on a farm.

The Associated Press reported investigators are searching for the possible presence of a body or bodies.

Kansas Atty. Gen. Phill Kline declined to say what they were looking for. He held a news conference to confirm that a warrant to search property in Morton County had been issued last week.

“We are executing that warrant. We anticipate that the execution of that warrant will take a great deal of time and so we will be on that site for the near future at least,” Kline said.

He said officials from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Morton County Sheriff’s office and Elkhart Police Department are involved in the search, which is occurring on a farm near Richfield.

He urged the public to not speculate on what is happening, saying it could jeopardize the investigation and harm the reputations of innocent people.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said her staff was informed last week by Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Bill Seck that the agency was asked to help secure the area. Sebelius said she didn’t know details.

“I guess there have been rumors for years about murders and bodies buried,” Sebelius said.
