Topeka ? Sydney Wilson has won back-to-back golf events.

One more would make her a state champion.

“I was really proud of Sydney going out and winning the regional in tough conditions,” Lawrence High coach Mike Lewis said after Wilson won the Class 6A regional with a six-over 78 on a cold, wet Monday at Topeka Public Golf Course. “I look forward to seeing what she can do at the state tournament.”

Wilson was second at the Sunflower League meet, first in the region and second at state as a sophomore last year. The junior won the Sunflower League meet by two strokes last week at Meadowbrook Country Club in Overland Park, and followed that with her one-stroke victory Monday.

Wilson wasn’t ready to declare herself the player to beat in Monday’s state tournament at St. Andrews Golf Club in Overland Park.

“Today I didn’t play very well,” Wilson said. “I hit the ball pretty well off the tee. My short game saved me because I hit my irons terrible. I probably missed more greens than I have all year.”

Wilson, who played the Topeka course Friday and Saturday to prepare, shot 39 on the front nine and closed with a 39 on the back. It could have been better.

She bogeyed No. 16, double-bogeyed 17 and finished with a par on 18.

“It wasn’t the strongest finish,” she said. “It was a relief to win, but it was a little disappointing because I should have finished stronger.”

Her 78 was good enough to edge Washburn Rural’s Abby Weddle by a stroke.

The top two teams qualified for state, but LHS settled for third. The Lions and Shawnee Heights each finished at 392 behind Washburn Rural (345), but Heights earned the runner-up spot by tie-breaker.

The same thing happened to LHS last week at league when the Lions tied Shawnee Mission East for second, but the Lancers took the runner-up trophy with a lower fifth-best score.

The top five individuals not on the regional champion or runner-up teams also advanced, and that included Lawrence’s Jamie Shmalberg (100), and Whitney Juneau (102).

“I expect them to lead us every time we go into a tournament,” Lewis said. “I’m really happy they have the opportunity to go to state. They deserve it.”

Lauren Miller (112) and Samantha Hays (119) also counted in Lawrence’s team score, and Brittany Laughlin had a 131.

Free State’s top finisher was Liz Brandt at 117.
