Missouri foe next for Eagles

? High-flying Lawrence Veritas Christian hopes to keep its glossy eight-man football record intact today against the Christian School of Springfield, Mo.

The Eagles (5-1) will tangle with the Warriors at 3 p.m. at Republic High’s field.

“We’ve seen them on tape,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said, “and they’re like the last two teams we’ve played — if we don’t play well, they’re capable of beating us.”

Veritas escaped with a 44-34 win last week at Tyro Christian following a 46-32 home triumph the week before over Wichita Trinity.

Veritas boasts a potent offense led by halfback Paul Kempf, who has accounted for 1,642 all-purpose yards and a team-high 14 touchdowns. Kempf has rushed for 813 yards and shares the team lead in receptions with end Mark Randtke. Both have 24 catches.

Halfback Jesse Schultz is the Eagles’ leading rusher with 866 yards and 13 touchdowns. Quarterback Casey Woods has thrown for 567 yards and 10 TDs.

Woods and Kempf also have sparkled on defense with six and four interceptions, respectively. Linebacker Andrew Bartlow and Kempf are the leading tacklers with 39.

After today’s game, the Eagles will have two regular-season games remaining against Wichita Word of Life (Oct. 15) and St. Mary’s Academy (Oct. 22).
