O-Northwest trips LHS

Familiar demons victimize Lions in 4-1 loss to Ravens

Against the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs finally earned a win.

The Lawrence High boys soccer team was not as successful against the Ravens of Olathe Northwest.

Those Ravens beat the Lions, 4-1, Tuesday night at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Anchored by speedy sophomore wings Jonathan Herrera and Jaipal Singh, the Ravens’ flight continued the Lions’ plight.

Olathe Northwest (3-6-1) coach Lewis Theobold said the sophomores were moved wide to spread out the opposing defense, creating more movement in the middle of the field.

“They’re so dynamic,” Theobold said. “They force a lot of things to happen.”

They did that Tuesday by centering passes within a few feet of the LHS goal and rocketing shots at Lions goalkeeper Colin Flanders.

Herrera struck first in the seventh minute with an unassisted goal that he buried in the left corner of the net after setting up his shot in a swarm of Lawrence defenders.

As usual, the Lions (1-9) nearly scored in the first half, this time on breakaway runs to the net by seniors Liam Kirby and Spencer Sorenson.

Lawrence High's Chris Cates, back, tries to defend a header from Olathe Northwest's Daniel Novin. The Lions lost, 4-1, Tuesday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.

“(Olathe Northwest) gave us some high goal-scoring opportunities because we put pressure on them,” LHS coach David Platt said.

“We just tried to play more aggressive,” LHS senior Dustin Billings said. “We played smarter balls. We were talking a lot better.”

Kirby had a one-on-one opportunity, but he kicked the ball right at the opposing goalkeeper.

“What more can you ask for? You just have to finish,” Platt said. “I can’t ask for any more intestinal fortitude because they are playing hard.”

After the Ravens scored twice early in the second half, Lawrence finally responded in the 49th minute when senior Adam Renfro sent a touch pass to senior Daniel Miranda, who finished the play for his sixth goal.

“We’ve been playing together for awhile,” Miranda said of Renfro. “We know each other’s runs. He gave me a perfect ball. I just had to capitalize.”

Theobold said given the Lions’ talent and the fact Lawrence’s schedule will become easier, he wouldn’t be surprised to see LHS turn its losing ways around.

“They’re in the same position we were in two weeks ago,” Theobold said. “If the ball goes the other way, they’d have a few wins.”

Lawrence will play host Thursday to Shawnee Mission North.
