Kerns services

Graveside services for Jack Kerns, 84, Hemet, Calif., will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. Military honors will be performed by Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion.

Mr. Kerns died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Lawrence, the son of Jacob and Sara Kerns. He attended Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles.

Mr. Kerns served in the U.S. Marines during World War II in the South Pacific for 32 months and was honorably discharged in September 1945. He was employed as an assistant animator for 17 years at Disney Studio and for 10 years at Hanna-Barbera Studio. He was a member of Screen Cartoonist Union for 27 years. He retired from Disney Studio on Nov. 30, 1982.

He married Mildred “Billie” Johns on Sept. 28, 1971, in Pasadena, Calif. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Karen Simpson, of Indiana, and Sandra Friberg, of Nevada; a sister, Margie Murphy, of Kansas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
