The Douglas County Community Foundation named prominent businessman and philanthropist Ross Beach to its board of directors at a recent meeting in Lawrence.

Beach is chairman of the Douglas County Bank board and president of Kansas Natural Gas Inc. He also is a rancher. He is past president of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and former chairman of the Kansas Fish and Game Commission. He is a past member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Kansas City, Dillon Stores, Woods Petroleum Inc., American Home Life Insurance Co. and the National Business Aircraft Assn. He is former chairman of the Kansas 4-H Foundation and the Kansas State Fair.

Beach has served on the advisory board to the business school at Kansas University. He received a Distinguished Service Citation from KU.

He received the 1994 Kansas Oil and Gas Hall of Fame Award and the 1999 Kansas Business Hall of Fame Award. In 2002, Beach was named Kansan of the Year by the Kansas Native Sons and Daughters.

Quiznos has opened a second Lawrence location at 4821 W. Sixth St., Suite K. The restaurant is owned and operated by Brian Wise, Lawrence. The store opened Saturday.

Lawrence Habitat for Humanity recently installed new officers and board members. The new officers are Chris Masoner, president; Kent Tomlinson, vice president; Jill Shelley, secretary; and Danette Umholtz, treasurer.

Board members who are starting a two-year term include Linda Benitez, Kansas University; Bonnie Briscoe, Lawrence public schools; Barbara Lacks, Sprint; Chris Schumm, Morgan Stanley; Jeff Southard, Abbott & Davidson; and Brian Tongier, Kansas University.

Other board members are Paul Forio, Felix Karlin, Steve Lane, Bo March, Sarah Rasmuss, Ken Ratzlaff, Nicole Rials and Isaac Wiley. Patrick Lowe, president of the KU Chapter of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, also serves on the board.

Board members who have completed their terms are Mike Clarke, Jerry Feese, Jon Heeb, Patty Kennedy, Suzanne Nutt, Cam Oury and Kathy Richardson.

Walt Hull Iron Work, Pleasant Grove, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a picnic Sept. 26 at Clinton Lake. Customers, vendors, friends and family attended. The company produces architectural and decorative ironwork and sculpture for individuals, businesses, schools and churches.

Kate Dinneen, who has been with the company for 10 years, received the Employee of the Decade award.

Mar Lan Construction LLC, Lawrence, announced it has recently moved the corporate headquarters to new offices located in the Berkeley Building at 1008 N.H., Suite 200, in downtown Lawrence.

The commercial general contractor was founded in Lawrence in 1999. Gale Lantis, company president, said the move would provide space for additional staff members, a plan room and a larger conference room.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has been appointed to the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s Internal Administration Subcommittee. NAIC President Diane Koken made the appointment during the NAIC fall national meeting.

The Internal Administration Subcommittee is responsible for monitoring the operations of the NAIC, including budget preparation, personnel review and financial administration.

Praeger also serves as vice chairwoman of the NAIC Midwestern Zone and is chairwoman of the association’s Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee.

The state of Kansas has reorganized and streamlined its food safety licensing and inspection activities for grocery stores and other licensed food processors and vendors.

The change is the result of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ Executive Reorganization Order 32, issued Jan. 14, which transfers certain food safety functions from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

With this change, the Kansas Department of Agriculture will begin licensing and inspecting about 3,700 Kansas grocery stores, restaurants in grocery stores, food processing plants, mobile ice cream vendors, food vending machines and food vending machine companies and dealers.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will continue to license and inspect about 11,000 Kansas restaurants, school food service operations, senior meal sites, mobile food units and all lodging facilities.

Westar Energy has developed a service program that allows customers to quickly and easily find out how long a power outage will last. Customers can access the estimated outage time by phone or the Web site, www.wr.com, if they are away from home.

The Better Business Bureau of Northeast Kansas has been contacted by a Kansan who lost $2,500 in an Australian lottery scam. The victim was convinced by a persuasive telephone scam artist that he had won $2 million. He was told the fee for processing the $2 million was $2,500.

Joyce Woodard, president of the bureau, warns foreign lotteries are illegal and will result in the loss of money. For more information, call the bureau at (785) 232-0454.

Honors and awards

Katie Armitage is the Community Cornerstone Award recipient for September. In recognition of Armitage’s service, CornerBank will contribute $100 to the Scholarship Fund of the University Women’s Club.

CornerBank developed the award program to recognize volunteers who contribute services that help build strong communities.

Armitage is a founding member of “Civil War on the Western Frontier.” She gives tours and talks for Lawrence schools and other organizations.

She served on the Lawrence Sesquicentennial Committee. She is a member of the Kansas State Historical Society, Douglas County Historical Society, Franklin County Historical Society, Lecompton Historical Society, Lawrence Preservation Alliance, Historic Mount Oread fund and the University Women’s Club.

Armitage earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree in history from KU.

The Kansas Volunteer Commission honored the Lawrence employees of Capitol Federal Savings with the corporate You Make A Difference Award during its volunteer recognition program Sept. 22 in Wichita.

Roger Hill Volunteer Center, a service of the United Way of Douglas County, nominated Capitol Federal based on its employees’ broad community volunteerism. As nominator, the center received a $1,000 award in honor of Capitol Federal Savings’ Lawrence offices.

The employees are involved in programs such as Lawrence Education Achievement Partners, KANU fund drive, Junior Achievement, Tenants to Homeowners and United Way of Douglas County.

Consulting Group One, a nonprofit group, is having a workshop “Hands-On Grant Writing” from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Mo. Participants will start the process of writing a grant for their needs during the workshop.

Young Professionals Network will meet Thursday at the Lawrence Community Theatre for a social hour with appetizers and drinks and then view a performance of the musical, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

The Kansas Minority Business Development Council will present a buyer supplier forum “Best Practices in Supplier Diversity.” The forum will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hyatt Regency in Wichita.

Excell LaFayette Jr., director of supplier development for Wal-Mart, will discuss topics such as how to develop and maintain a supplier diversity program, finding bidding opportunities and how to network with purchasing agents.
