Norman, Okla. ? When opposing offenses throw the deep ball, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops isn’t pressing the panic button, but his finger might be hovering over it.

The No. 2 Sooners (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) gave up four passes of more than 30 yards in their 38-35 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday as the Cowboys aired it out and came within a missed field goal of sending the game to overtime.

It was the closest call the Sooners have had this season.

Stoops gave his defenders credit for getting stingy at the end of the game, but said some adjustments need to be made.

“At times, we didn’t play the ball very well and at times we weren’t as deep as we needed to be,” Stoops said.

The Cowboys capitalized with pass plays of 50, 46, 39 and 32 yards as freshman quarterback Donovan Woods had a career day.

Stoops said Oklahoma would work on “stretching it out” in practice this week to help improve the coverage in the secondary.

Safety Brodney Pool said Oklahoma State’s receivers also were a factor.

“Some of it was our fault and others were good adjustments,” Pool said. “They have (Division I) players just like we do and they’re taught to make plays. They made a couple of plays on us.

Pool said he didn’t think the Sooners needed to make any adjustments, but instead must execute better.

“It comes down to us,” Pool said. “As long as we’re in position and we know that we’re there, we just have to make the play.”

The Sooners have been without starting cornerback Antonio Perkins since their Oct. 9 game against Texas, and Stoops said the senior is “doubtful” for today’s game against Texas A&M. Stoops said Perkins’ absence is something the Sooners can’t worry about.

Junior college transfer Chijioke Onyenegecha has started the last two games in place of Perkins, and Stoops said he thought Perkins’ replacements have “played well.”

The big pass has popped up against the Sooners’ several times this season. Oklahoma twice left Houston receivers uncovered at the line for big gains in Week 2. Then, two weeks ago the Sooners gave up a 78-yard TD pass against Kansas before settling in.

The Sooners figure they know what’s on the Aggies’ minds today.

“We expect them to come in and try to beat us deep,” linebacker Lance Mitchell said. “What we have to do is go in and get ready for it.”
