‘Whole world’ ready to greet new students

Want a profile of the most common Kansas University student?

She’d be a 21-year-old woman from Johnson County. She’d be white, she’d be enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and she’d be single.

That might be the typical profile, but you can find people of just about every type on campus.

“That’s the comfort zone most of us have — to be with people who look like us and think like us,” said Marlesa Roney, vice provost for student success. “But there is a whole world here in Lawrence — literally.”

As of last fall, the 26,814 students on KU’s Lawrence campus included residents of all 105 Kansas counties, all 50 states and 114 countries.

Sixty-eight percent of KU’s students were from Kansas, while 32 percent were not. There were 1,644 international students on campus.

Eighty-one percent of students were white, with the rest international students and U.S. resident minorities. The largest ethnic group was Asians, at 3.6 percent of the student body.

Women outnumber men on campus, though only slightly. Fifty-two percent of students were women, while 48 percent were male.

More than three-fourths of KU students are undergraduates. Nearly 8 in 10 are full-time students.

The average age of undergraduate students is 21. The average graduate student is 31.

Eighteen percent of students live on campus, with the rest living off campus.

Students also vary widely in the courses they’re studying. KU offers approximately 200 majors.

Roney said she suggested students attend meetings of organizations they might naturally be drawn to in order to expand their horizons.

“This is probably the most diverse and most exciting environment you’ll ever live in,” she said. “We have an open-minded spirit here.”
