R. P. ‘Phil’ Stiles

Memorial services for R.P. “Phil” Stiles, 71, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Stiles died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 14, 1933, in Paola, the son of Bernard and Margaret Schroeder Stiles. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1951 and moved to Lawrence from Baldwin in 1953.

Mr. Stiles was a clerk at the U.S. Post Office for 32 years. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1958 and served in several offices, including as the chairman of the board of trustees. He was a member of Roundup for Hunger of the United Methodist Church and the AIDS Task Force of the Methodist Church. He was a Cubmaster for Pack 3052.

He married Diane Pichelman on Oct. 31, 1953, in Baldwin. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Mark, Prairie Village, and Chris, Concordia; three sisters, Jeanne Parker, Bozeman, Mont., Eleanor Stiles, Gardner, and Marjorie Hitchcock, Lawrence; and four granddaughters.

A son, Jamie, died May 23, 1991.

The family suggests memorials to the church or Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
