Two arrests made at DUI checkpoint

Lawrence Police stopped 304 people and arrested two in a DUI checkpoint Friday night in the 1800 block of Kentucky Street.

Both of the people arrested were suspected of drunken driving and possession of marijuana. One of the drivers also had an open container of alcohol in the car, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

Police gave out 47 warnings for seat belt violations during the checkpoint, which lasted from 11 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.

Teenager charged in stabbing at party

A Lawrence teen is charged with injuring two men with a knife in a fight early Sunday near Sixth and Florida streets.

Prosecutors on Monday charged Edward R. Vital, 18, with two counts of aggravated battery.

He was arrested after police were called about 1 a.m. Sunday to a fight at a party in the 1500 block of Lynch Court. When officers arrived, they found people fleeing the scene, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital employees later contacted the department and said two men injured in the fight had come in for treatment — one with a stab wound to the abdomen and another with a cut on his hand.

Pattrick said police thought the two injured men, both 19-year-old Eudora residents, fought with Vital after he wasn’t allowed into the party.

Police also arrested a 19-year-old Lawrence man who refused to stop for police and sideswiped an occupied patrol car as he left the party, Pattrick said. Brian P. Clark faces charges including reckless driving, aggravated battery and driving under the influence.

Juvenile arrested in dead cat incident

Police suspect a 13-year-old Lawrence boy of picking up a dead cat from the road and throwing it into a neighbor’s car.

The incident happened about 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the 2200 block of Harper Street,

according to a report. The car’s 44-year-old owner wasn’t in it at the time, but the mess caused an estimated $75 in damage, according to a report.

Officers arrested the boy on suspicion of criminal damage and took him to the Juvenile Detention Center, 330 Industrial Lane, according to a report.
