Three city golfers qualify for state

Lions, Firebirds fail to advance teams

? The expectation monster made Monday’s Class 6A regional golf meet a little gloomier than it should’ve been for Lawrence High.

The Lions were shooting for a team berth at next week’s state meet in Topeka. Senior Nathaniel Spencer was looking to take home individual medalist honors, to boot.

Neither happened.

The Lions were the first team on the outside looking in, taking fourth place with 325 strokes Monday at Heritage Golf Course. Spencer and teammate Daniel Brumley did qualify individually, taking third and 10th. In addition, Free State’s Scott Moseley will head to state next week after shooting an 84.

The top three teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team earn invitations to state.

Overland Park Aquinas (299), Olathe East (308) and Olathe North (310) were the teams that earned the nod.

“When you look at the final difference, they shot 310 and we shot 325,” LHS coach Ron Commons said. “It was a distant fourth, and that’s disappointing because we played well the last couple of weeks and we thought we were peaking at the right time.”

Spencer was equally frustrated by his day. He shot a 1-over 72, good enough for third place behind Michael Schnegelberger of Aquinas and Brad Boan of Olathe East. Spencer was 1-over on the front nine and even on the back nine, but saw several “what-ifs” scattered across his scorecard.

“It was just an up-and-down day,” Spencer said. “I think I had five bogies and four birdies. I wasn’t really on putting-wise.”

Brumley, meanwhile, tied for ninth by shooting a 77, but lost to Andrew Glenski of Aquinas on the first playoff hole.

Regardless, the two will still be able to represent Lawrence High individually next week at Topeka Country Club.

“That’s senior leadership,” Commons said. “Those two of played pretty consistent all year long. It’s nice that they’re qualified for the state tournament, and they’ll get an opportunity to play one more round.”

Free State High finished sixth with 340 strokes, but saw its streak of sending at least one person to state every year continue. Moseley shot a 5-over 40 on the front nine and a 44 on the back, tying him with Leavenworth’s Bret Elliot for the fifth and final qualifying spot.

Teammate Jason O’Bryon actually shot an 80, but was disqualified for allegedly throwing a club. Michael Hrenchir (85), Andy Frye (85) and Quinn Klutman (86) rounded out the scoring for Free State.

“If we count the DQ, we shoot 334,” FSHS coach Jack Schreiner said. “We had five kids in the 80s. I can’t be displeased. We’re playing as well as we played all year. It just isn’t good enough.”
