The Lawrence High and Free State baseball teams won’t travel far for regionals this week. The softball and soccer teams are a different story, though.

Class 6A regional pairings were announced Saturday, and, as expected, the Free State baseball team will play host to a four-team pod Wednesday — one that includes fifth-seeded Lawrence High. The Firebirds (16-3) will play Emporia (4-14) at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Free State. Lawrence High (8-10) will play Topeka (8-10) immediately afterward.

The winners of the first two games will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Free State.

The city soccer and softball teams, meanwhile, will be leaving town. Lawrence High softball grabbed a fifth seed and will depart Tuesday to Emporia to play Washburn Rural. Free State earned a sixth seed and will play Topeka High on Tuesday in Manhattan.

The city softball squads are in separate pods and can’t meet unless both advance to the state tournament.

The city soccer squads will hit the road Tuesday for regional action. Free State will play at Washburn Rural, while Lawrence plays at a state semifinalist from last year — Emporia.

If the two city soccer teams win, they would play each other Thursday in Emporia.
