LHS rally falls short against Cougars

? A six-run sixth inning wasn’t enough for Lawrence High’s baseball team Thursday in a 13-10 loss at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

“We didn’t get off to a good start giving up four in the bottom of the first,” LHS coach David Petry said. “We had kind of gotten back into the game, and then we gave up six runs in the bottom of the fourth.”

The game was on the verge of being called because of the 10-run mercy rule when the Lions (7-9) fell behind 13-4 after five innings.

“Our kids showed a lot of character to come back and make a ballgame out of it,” Petry said. “We just couldn’t get anything going in the seventh.”

Tom Bush led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Ryan Engel, Brian Heere and Courtney Hutchison each had two hits for LHS.

Lawrence High will play host to Olathe East in a Tuesday doubleheader at Ice Field.
