Cameras capture thefts of computer cartridges

Police are investigating an unusual case of shoplifting from a south Lawrence store.

Security cameras at Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa, caught 10 people taking nearly 100 computer printing cartridges from the store. The incident happened between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the suspects, a man and nine women, used a plastic container to hide the items, valued at more than $3,000. Then, according to police, a member of the group wheeled the container out the door in a shopping cart.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman would not comment on the case, other than to say store officials are fully cooperating.

Felon faces prison for weapons charge

Kansas City, Kan. — A Lawrence man pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Travis S. Loeser, 21, admitted to being in the possession of a rifle on Nov. 21, 2003, in Lawrence. He had been convicted in 2002 in Douglas County of a felony, aggravated battery.

Loeser faces up to 10 years in a federal prison without parole. Sentencing is set for July 19 in U.S. District Court before Judge Carlos Murguia.
